    Israel ’s military boasts extensive experience in the kind of counterterrorism and urban warfare that America ’s forces have been struggling to master in Iraq . While Israel certainly had some tactical achievements in fighting insurgents in the West Bank and Gaza , very little is publicly said about the military cost of honing its skills. Little is said about the toll that ruling over and policing an occupied hostile civilian population takes on the military, about the strategic futility of perpetuating the occupation and about the cumulative impact of this burden on Israel ’s military.
