Sitting here in Washington, DC, watching an unpopular and horribly managed war in Iraq result in the daily deaths of American soldiers and Iraqi civilians, one wishes that we had processes that allowed for the formation of an investigative committee such as Israel usually assigns in the event of national crises.
Even absent its designation as a formal Commission of Inquiry under Israeli law, the Winograd Committee’s judgments about personal responsibility and strategic failures will be taken seriously by the public and the political leadership, and its recommendations will for the most part be adopted.
