April 30, 2001- A commission appointed by President Clinton, chaired by Senator George Mitchell, joined by Senator Warren Rudman and others, published its inquiry into the Israeli-Palestinian violence that began in September 2000 and made recommendations for halting it.
June 24, 2002 - President Bush announced his support for the creation of a Palestinian state alongside Israel, conditioned on Palestinians electing new leadership.
April 30, 2003 - The U.S. State Department released the text of the "roadmap" to a permanent solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The roadmap specified the steps for the two parties to take to reach a settlement, and a timeline for doing so, under the auspices of the Quartet – the U.S., European Union, UN, and Russia.
