Following the Second Lebanon War, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert established a commission, headed by former Justice Dr. Eliyahu Winograd, to probe the decision to go to war and its implementation. The commission released its interim report this week, analyzing the time from the IDF’s exit from Lebanon to the time between July 12 and July 17, when the decision to go to war was taken. The final report, which will deal with the rest of the war, is expected in August.
Among the findings of the interim report was the following:
“In making the decision to go to war, the government did not consider the whole range of options, including that of continuing the policy of ‘containment’, or combining political and diplomatic moves with military strikes below the ‘escalation level’, or military preparations without immediate military action - so as to maintain for Israel the full range of responses to the abduction.
“This failure reflects weakness in strategic thinking, which derives the response to the event from a more comprehensive and encompassing picture.” Read more>>
