In its latest decision overruling Israel’s influential security establishment, the High Court of Justice on Tuesday ordered the state to reroute a section of the Israeli separation barrier that had cut the West Bank village of Bilin from much of its farmland.
Although this is not the first time that the High Court has ruled in the Palestinians’ favor in cases relating to the separation barrier, Bilin has taken on a special significance as a symbol of popular resistance to the construction. Over the past two and a half years, its villagers, together with a dedicated band of Israeli leftists and foreign supporters, have held weekly demonstrations in the fields and groves along the barrier route, often ending in confrontations with Israeli forces there.
