Tough questions hovered in the air. Would there be a joint declaration of principles with the Palestinians? Would Israel commit to the 1967 borders? Would it take in Palestinian refugees? And would it agree to divide Jerusalem?
Traditionally in Israeli politics the argument over these issues has been between left and right. Today, the ideological battle is being waged inside the ruling party itself - and the outcome could determine whether the latest round of Israeli-Palestinian peace efforts and parallel moves to spark a wider Middle East process get off the ground.
