UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon has said that he hopes "quick progress" will be made in establishing viable-border control measures to prevent drug and weapon smuggling into Lebanon across the Syrian border. Speaking to the An-Nahar daily in New York, Ban said that "fully controlling" the border should be a "priority" after Beirut and Damascus established full diplomatic relations for the first time earlier this year.
The secretary general said that he spoken to President Michel Sleiman, Prime Minister Fouad Siniora and Syrian President Bashar Assad about the issue and had urged them to cooperate on establishing firm control over the border, which is known to be vulnerable to smuggling and other illegal activities.
