Ghaith al-Omari, former adviser to Palestinian President Abbas. Interview with Middle East Bulletin, November 12, 2008:
“Arab states should fight the instinctive urge some may have to push for an inter-Palestinian agreement at any cost. If we learned anything from the failed Mecca Accord, it is that no agreement is better than an unstable, unsustainable one. An agreement that does not entail Hamas giving up its hold over Gaza, relinquishing its militias, and accepting the two-state solution will in effect legitimize its coup, give it a de facto armed veto over Palestinian domestic and foreign policy, and bring back international isolation. Such an outcome would be a major setback to the cause of peace and would embolden extremist movements in the whole region.”
